Sharing equally

In maths we have been learning about sharing equally.  Today we used pretend pizza bases to help us learn how to share equally into halves and in quarters.  We made pizza toppings with  play dough.  We then shared these toppings equally in halves and in quarters.  We discovered that if you can skip count it sometimes helps to work out how many toppings in each section of the pizza quicker.

Hedgehog Fun

In our literacy group we are reading and investigating about food!  How to make food, different types of food even  buying food.  Today we read a book about making a hedgehog out of food.  We used skewers and pushed marsh mellows, grapes and pineapple onto them.  We poked the skewers into half an orange.  We used raisins for eyes as we didn't have cloves.  Autumn's dad showed her what cloves look like.

"They smelt funny" Autumn said.

Thank you for sharing your hedgehogs with
Te Kakano.  They were very yummy!

Coffee machine

Mrs Parkes kindly donated her old coffee machine to our class that doesn't work anymore.  We have had fun playing with it in our made up cafe.  Mrs Johnson and Mrs Smith sure had alot of coffees today!  Before we played with it Autumn, Jared and Aayla really wanted to open it up and see how it worked.  What wonderful curiousity!

Writing Workshop

Aayla came to a workshop today to work on her writing goal. She is learning how to record the sounds she can hear in order. We looked at some pictures of three letter words. We needed to carefully sound out each of the letters and write them down. We had a lot of fun stretching out the words and listening for the sounds we could hear. Aayla was able to make the link with her phonic lessons and could identify some rhyming words. Great connections in your learning Aayla!

Author's Chair 2

Aayla has been making great choices during Write to Self time. She is able to find a quiet place to work and write for the whole time.
Keep being a great author, Aayla

Achieving my Writing Goal

Aayla has been working really hard on her writing goal of using spaces between words.  It is now much easier to read her interesting stories.

Aayla has chosen a new goal of being able to write all the sounds she can hear in order.

Our Phonics

In our phonics lessons, we have been learning about word families. This week we are learning words that belong to the 'at' family. Here is Aayla's silly sentence:

What other words belong to the 'at' family?

The Boat Challenge

This is Ayla's boat she made for our boat task.

My boat was made out of wood and paper. It was hard making my boat because I couldn't stick the paper on. I used sticky tape but it still didnt work. I used more tape.

In the water the boat broke. The paper ripped in half because all the water soaks into the paper and it starts to rip. Next time I would not use paper. I could use rope and material.

My Puppet

Easy Blog Photo
Here is a picture of Aayla and her puppet, Ariel. Te Kakano made puppets for Friday Surprise Day and our Whakangahau. We had to think about all the parts our puppets would need. We also had to show persistence to make sure the parts stayed on and looked how we planned it.

"My puppet is special because I made it with glitter string. We have to look after it carefully because it was made of hot glue. It was hard to glue the things on. I had to stick the decorations on. "

Beach Day

Our class went to Nga Motu Beach with Frankley School.

In the morning we made sand castles on the beach. Aayla's Grandma helped her to make a wonderful sandcastle. They used the bucket and containers to make a castle and then Aayla found things on the beach to use as decoration. She used shells, drift wood and seaweed.

After lunch Te Kakano went for a swim. Aayla had loads of fun splashing in the waves.

Swan Plant Seeds

Easy Blog Photo
"Mum look I would like to grow some swan plants with these seeds. So caterpillars will come to the swan plants. Caterpillars turn into butterflies."
Mrs Cameron brought some swan plant pods into the library to show us.  Finding seeds inside the pods was exciting.

Book Club

Each Friday, we get together for Book Club. We share the books that we have read during the week with our Book Club partner. We can read the whole book or choose our favourite parts of the book. Our partner listens and might ask some questions. We also like to share connections we make together.

Here Aayla is reading "What The Tide Brings In". This was a shared book we read together during the week and one Aayla chose to read herself. They had a great time making connections with the book and the day we had the beach.

Great reading Aayla.
